To be eligible, students must be enrolled in a Rhode Island High School. The contest consists of a multiple choice examination that begins at 9:30 a.m. and ends at 10:30 a.m. the exam covers topics from general chemistry.
Scoring is done by determining the number of correct answers. Guessing is not encouraged, nor is it forbidden. In the event of a tie, the contestant with fewer wrong answers will be judged the higher finisher.
Students must bring:
- Two (or more) pre-sharpened pencils. (Pencil sharpeners may not be available.)
- A suitable calculator. Programmable calculators must be cleared of previous programs.
There are two Divisions of Competition:
Division I: Students who have had no more than one year of chemistry that is not AP.
Division II: Students who have had more than one year of chemistry or AP.
Individual Competition: Schools may bring as many individual competitors as they want. Individual competitors are non-team participants, and do not impact the school team score.
Team Competition: The Chair of the Science department from each school may designate (up to) eight of the school’s students for each division in which the school intends to compete. The school with the highest score will be awarded a trophy in each division. Students not designated as team members will not be counted in the team competition.
Awards:
Trophies will be awarded to the three highest-scoring competitors in each division. A bowl will be awarded to the highest-scoring team in each division.
Locations:
The competition takes place in two locations: The eight Division I team competitors should sit in the front half of Beaupre 100. The eight Division II team competitors should sit in the back half of Beaupre 100. Non-team participants should report to the Chafee Hall, Room 271. Students from the same school should sit far away from each other.
