Grading Policy

Grades for exams, quizzes, and homework assignments are posted on the CHM 112 Sakai site.

Exams:

Four hour exams will be given, each worth up to 100 points. Makeup exams are only given if appropriate written justification is provided. None of the hour exams will be scaled or curved. The total number of points possible from the hour exams is 400 or 0, depending upon your final exam score.

Quizzes and Homework:

There is a homework assignment due each class meeting. The homework assignments are typically 1 or 2 questions relating to the material from the previous lecture. Each assignment is due at the beginning of class (11:10 a.m.) and no late assignments will be accepted (this means you need to get to class on time). I will accept a maximum of two homework assignments via e-mail (weuler@chm.uri.edu) as long as the assignment is received prior to 11:10 a.m. on the due date. Quizzes are given at random intervals and will cover topics discussed in class the day of the quiz. The maximum total number of points possible from Quizzes and Homework assignments is 350. However, there will be more points offered than 350 (probably on the order of 400, depending upon the number of quizzes given). This means that if you miss an occasional quiz or homework assignment, you still have several opportunities to reach the maximum of 350 points.

Final Exam:

The final exam is cumulative and integrates material from all parts of the course. The final exam is worth up to 150 points or 550 points, depending upon your hour exam total.

Total Course points and Final Grade calculation:

The total is found as follows:

1) Add up the four hour exam scores and the final exam score

2) Multiply the final exam score by 11/3

3) The larger of these two numbers was scaled using Scaled Exam Score = (maximum exam total)0.55×5500.45

4) The Scaled Exam Score was added to the Homework/Quiz total to give the Total Course Points.

The Total Course Points were converted to a percentage (divide by 9).
