The Solvent Sensitive Reaction of Phenyl Substituted Poly(iminomethylene)

Abstract

Phenyl substituted poly(iminomethylene) undergoes a slow reaction, when dissolved, which can be monitored in the visible region at 550 nm. Because the reaction is reversible, and is sensitive to solvent polarity, it was initially thought that this reaction was associated with a conformational change in the polymer. However, a combination of viscosity, GPC, and kinetic measurements show that this reaction is associated with a reversible polymerization/depolymerization of the polymer, at least in nonpolar solvents.
