CH3NO2 is called nitromethane. It is a colorless liquid at room temperature (melting point = –28.5 oC, boiling point = 101.2 oC), slightly more dense than water (density = 1.14 g/cm3), and is soluble in water and alcohol. Nitromethane is sometimes used by racecar drivers as a performance booster in gasoline.
