Chemistry underlies many of today's most engaging fields of study, including biotechnology, nanotechnology, renewable energy, and forensic science. The Chemistry Department at URI delivers curricula in these exciting areas of chemistry at both the undergraduate and graduate levels.

In 1957, the Department of Chemistry became the first department at the University of Rhode Island to offer the Doctor of Philosophy degree. Since that time, the department has grown to 17 full-time faculty, about 140 declared undergraduate chemistry majors, approximately 60 graduate students, and a number of postdoctoral associates. A support staff aids faculty and students in both research and teaching.

URI offers three undergraduate chemistry degrees: the Bachelor of Arts in Chemistry; the Bachelor of Science in Chemistry (certified by the American Chemical Society); and the Bachelor of Science in Chemistry and Forensic Chemistry. All three degrees provide a firm foundation in the basic areas of chemistry, while the B.S. degrees allow students to pursue chemistry in more depth, including research.

Research is the heart of graduate education. The Department of Chemistry offers programs in analytical, inorganic, organic, physical chemistry and biochemistry, but students are not restricted to these traditional areas. In particular, the Department has emerging strengths in multidisciplinary areas such as sensors, forensic science, and renewable energy.
